The Science Behind RetroBrighting

RetroBrighting removes yellowing from vintage plastic, particularly ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene), commonly used in electronics. This yellowing occurs due to photo-oxidation, a chemical reaction between bromine compounds (added as flame retardants) in the plastic and UV light. Over time, UV exposure breaks down bromine bonds, causing the molecules to become visible and create the yellowish hue.

The RetroBrighting process reverses this discoloration by applying a hydrogen peroxide-based solution and exposing the plastic to UV light. When UV light interacts with hydrogen peroxide, it creates free radicals—reactive molecules that break down the visible bromine bonds in the plastic. This reaction restores the plastic’s appearance closer to its original color, although the effect may fade again over time, especially with renewed exposure to UV light.
