Choosing The Right Upscaler Or HDMI Adapter

Not every retro gaming upscaler accepts the same signals or processes them in the same way.

A console-specific HDMI adapter is normally the simplest choice when connecting one particular system. The RetroScaler2x provides affordable multi-console support for composite, S-Video and standard-definition component video. The OSSC prioritises sharp line multiplication from RGB SCART, component and VGA sources, while the GBSC Pro combines broad input support with motion-adaptive deinterlacing and more extensive scaling controls.

A higher advertised HDMI output resolution does not automatically produce a better picture. Source-signal quality, deinterlacing, scaling, display compatibility and input latency can all have a greater effect on the final result.

Console-Specific HDMI Adapters

Console-specific adapters provide a compact plug-and-play option without requiring a separate multi-input video processor.

Our range includes HDMI adapters for Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64 and GameCube, a digital HDMI adapter for GameCube DOL-001 consoles, component-to-HDMI conversion for Nintendo Wii, a Dreamcast VGA-to-HDMI adapter and an Original Xbox HDMI adapter with optical audio.

Some adapters convert the console’s original signal directly, while others provide line doubling or fixed-resolution scaling. They cannot increase the internal rendering resolution or add graphical detail that was not produced by the original console.

RetroScaler2x For Composite, S-Video & Component Video

The RetroScaler2x AV-to-HDMI line doubler is designed for standard-definition composite, S-Video and YPbPr component signals.

It correctly line-doubles 240p to 480p and 288p to 576p while converting 480i and 576i into progressive HDMI output. Its optional smoothing filter can soften early polygonal graphics, while the standard mode retains a sharper appearance for most pixel-art games.

The RetroScaler2x does not accept RGB SCART, RGBS, VGA, 480p or higher-resolution input signals. It is a compact low-latency line doubler rather than a 720p or 1080p video scaler.

OSSC For RGB SCART, Component & VGA

The OSSC V1.8 Open Source Scan Converter is suited to enthusiasts wanting sharp output, ultra-low processing latency and extensive control over compatible RGB SCART, component and VGA sources.

Classic 240p and 288p signals can be processed using Line2x, Line3x, Line4x, Line5x and Line6x modes. Higher modes can produce extremely sharp results, although compatibility depends on the television, monitor, HDMI equipment and video timings involved.

The OSSC does not accept standard composite or S-Video directly. Systems using those connections require a suitable transcoder, video modification or different upscaler. Its fast bob deinterlacing also prioritises low latency when processing 480i and 576i, which can create visible movement around fine text and horizontal details.

GBSC Pro For Interlaced & Multi-Console Setups

The RetroScaler GBSC Pro provides composite, S-Video, RGB SCART, component and VGA inputs within one multi-console video processor.

Its motion-adaptive deinterlacing makes it particularly useful for systems and games that rely heavily on 480i or 576i output, including much of the PlayStation 2 library. It also maintains a stable HDMI output when compatible games switch between resolutions such as 240p and 480i, reducing lengthy display resynchronisation interruptions.

Selectable output modes up to 1080p, adjustable scanlines, image positioning, sharpening, filtering, saveable profiles and Wi-Fi browser control provide considerably more flexibility than a basic console-specific HDMI adapter.

Understanding 240p, 480i & Line Doubling

Many early consoles use 240p or 288p progressive video, while later systems frequently combine those resolutions with 480i or 576i interlaced output.

A gaming-focused line doubler recognises low-resolution progressive signals correctly and converts them into a format that modern HDMI displays are more likely to accept. Generic video converters may handle 240p as interlaced video, potentially producing unnecessary flicker, softness or processing delay.

Line doubling and upscaling improve compatibility and presentation, but they do not change the console’s internal rendering resolution. Final picture quality still depends on the original signal, console revision, cable, video processor and connected display.

Compatibility can depend on the console model, region, available output connection and selected video mode. For example, GameCube digital HDMI adapters may require a DOL-001 console, some Dreamcast games do not support VGA, and certain upscalers cannot accept composite video or progressive 480p input.

The connected television, monitor, HDMI switch, AV receiver or capture device must also support the resolution, refresh rate and video timings produced by the selected adapter or upscaler.
