Designed for retro systems using composite, S-Video or YPbPr component output, the RetroScaler2x converts standard-definition analogue video and stereo audio into a clean digital HDMI connection. It provides a practical alternative for modern displays that no longer include traditional AV inputs.

The RetroScaler2x correctly recognises classic 240p and 288p progressive video rather than treating it as interlaced footage. NTSC 240p sources are line-doubled to 480p, while PAL 288p sources are converted to 576p, helping retain the sharp pixel structure and responsive feel of original retro games.

Interlaced 480i and 576i content is deinterlaced and output as progressive 480p or 576p HDMI video. This improves compatibility with modern televisions, monitors and capture equipment while keeping processing latency exceptionally low.

Three analogue input options make the converter suitable for a broad range of retro gaming setups. Composite provides the widest compatibility, S-Video delivers improved colour separation where available, and YPbPr component offers the strongest picture quality supported by the device.

The optional Filter mode adds smoothing to reduce hard edges and visible aliasing. It can be useful for early polygonal 3D graphics and flicker-prone interlaced games, while leaving the filter switched off produces a sharper presentation for most 2D pixel-art titles.

A dedicated pass-through mode digitises the original incoming video signal without changing its resolution. This can be useful with specialist equipment that accepts 240p, 288p, 480i or 576i over HDMI, although standard line-doubled mode will provide wider compatibility with most modern displays.

Video and stereo audio are carried through a single HDMI cable, helping reduce the number of connections required around the display. Input selection, smoothing and operating modes are controlled directly from the buttons on the unit, with no drivers, software or network setup required.

Nintendo Entertainment System / NES Front Loader: Composite video through the console AV output.

Original Famicom: The stock RF-only console requires a composite, S-Video or component-output modification before it can be connected.

AV Famicom: Composite video.

NES-101 Top Loader: The stock RF-only console requires an AV-output modification.

Super Nintendo / Super Famicom: Composite or S-Video where supported by the console model and region. Compatible active YPbPr component cables can also be used.

Critical Info

Supported Input Resolutions: The RetroScaler2x accepts 240p, 288p, 480i and 576i analogue video signals.

480p & Higher Inputs Are Not Supported: Do not configure the connected source to output 480p, 576p, 720p, 1080i or 1080p. The source must use a supported standard-definition video mode.

Line-Doubled Output: NTSC-format sources are output at 480p, while PAL-format sources are output at 576p.

No 720p Or 1080p Output: The RetroScaler2x is a 2x line doubler rather than a high-resolution scaler. Its maximum processed output is 480p for NTSC sources or 576p for PAL sources.

No PAL To NTSC Conversion: The unit preserves the source video standard and refresh rate. It does not convert PAL 50Hz into NTSC 60Hz or NTSC into PAL.

PAL-M Compatibility Is Not Guaranteed: Compatibility with PAL-M equipment can vary and is not guaranteed across all sources.

Composite, S-Video & Component Only: The unit accepts CVBS composite, 4-pin S-Video and YPbPr component video.

RGB & VGA Are Not Supported: RGBS, RGB SCART, RGsB, RGBHV and VGA signals cannot be connected directly.

SCART Is Not Supported: A passive composite-to-SCART adapter does not create a compatible RGB connection and is unnecessary when the device already provides a direct composite input.

RF Is Not Supported: Old aerial-style RF connections cannot be connected directly. RF-only equipment requires an AV modification or external RF demodulator.

YPbPr Component Only: The red, green and blue RCA connections accept YPbPr component video. They do not accept RGB through RCA connectors.

Only One Input At A Time: Select composite, S-Video or component using the Input Select button. Disconnect unused sources where possible, even when those sources are switched off.

2x Mode Is The Default: When powered on, the unit normally starts in line-doubling mode and outputs 480p or 576p.

Pass-Through Mode Retains The Source Resolution: Pass-through digitises the original analogue signal without line doubling. Some modern televisions, monitors, HDMI switches and capture devices may not accept 240p, 288p, 480i or 576i through HDMI.

Filter Mode Is Optional: The smoothing filter softens hard pixel edges and can reduce visible aliasing. Many users prefer it switched off for sharp 2D pixel graphics and switched on for early 3D games or flicker-prone interlaced content.

480i & 576i Deinterlacing: Interlaced sources are converted into progressive 480p or 576p output. Fine text and horizontal details may still show some flicker or deinterlacing artefacts.

Aspect Ratio Is Controlled By The Display: The RetroScaler2x does not provide an aspect-ratio selector. Most classic games should be displayed at 4:3 through your television or monitor settings.

External Power Is Required: Connect the unit to a regulated 5V Micro USB power source. It can normally be powered by a television USB port or a suitable USB power adapter.

USB Power Adapter Not Included: A Micro USB power cable is supplied, but a mains USB power adapter is not included.

HDMI Cable Not Included: A standard HDMI cable is required to connect the RetroScaler2x to your television, monitor or capture device.

Connect Equipment With The Power Off: Switch off the converter and connected equipment before inserting or removing video cables.

Warranty Information

This RetroScaler2x AV to HDMI Converter is covered by a 12-month limited Retrolize warranty against manufacturing defects and hardware faults arising during normal use.

The warranty does not cover accidental damage, liquid damage, damaged connectors, incorrect power supplies, excessive voltage, unauthorised modification or damage caused by incompatible cables, consoles or display equipment.

Differences caused by the original video signal, composite or S-Video picture quality, deinterlacing behaviour, filter selection, aspect-ratio settings, PAL-M compatibility or display support for passthrough signals are not considered hardware faults.

The warranty does not guarantee compatibility with every television, monitor, HDMI switch, AV receiver or capture device when using the original-resolution pass-through mode.

Warranty claims remain subject to the full Retrolize warranty terms.
