It is about access.

PlayStation Store Closures Are A Preservation Warning
One of the biggest stories this week came from PlayStation, and it is exactly the sort of thing that should make retro gamers pay attention.
Sony confirmed that the PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita will close globally in July 2027, with some regions losing access earlier. Mexico, Honduras and Nicaragua are due to see the PS3 store close from August 2026, with further closures in Latin America and the Middle East following before the wider global shutdown.
Sony says previously purchased content will remain available to download for the foreseeable future.
That sounds reassuring at first.
But “for the foreseeable future” is not the same as “forever”.
That is the part that matters.
A digital storefront is not like a shelf full of cartridges or discs. When a physical shop disappears, the games people already bought can still move around the second-hand market. They can still be sold, traded, repaired, collected, dumped, archived and played on working hardware.
When a digital storefront closes, the situation changes completely.
New purchases stop. Discovery stops. Prices stop being market-driven and become irrelevant because the shop no longer exists. Store-exclusive games become harder to obtain. DLC becomes more awkward. Patches, demos, themes, smaller indie titles and niche digital releases suddenly become much more fragile.
For the PS3 and PS Vita, this matters because both systems had digital storefronts that became important parts of their libraries. But convenience and ownership are not the same thing.

Modern games can include day-one patches, online authentication, server-side features, digital DLC, rotating licences, timed events, account systems, cloud saves and constantly updated builds. Even when a disc exists, it may not contain the version of the game people actually played.
That makes preservation much harder.
Putting a cartridge on a shelf is one thing. Preserving a digital game with missing updates, expired licences and dead servers is another.
Museums, libraries and archives need more than good intentions. They need legal routes to preserve software properly. They need ways to study digital games. Without that, the industry ends up in a very strange position.

From a business perspective, that may be understandable.

Prototype cartridges were thrown away. Development material sat in cupboards. Localised builds vanished. Manuals, packaging and promotional material were treated as disposable.

Evercade, Sega & iam8bit Show Why Physical Still Has Power
While PlayStation’s news pushed the conversation towards digital-only distribution, Evercade, Sega and iam8bit gave retro gamers the exact opposite message.
Evercade responded to Sony’s physical media news with a short parody video based on the old PlayStation game-sharing joke from 2013. The point was simple: to share a physical game, you hand it to someone.
That is it.
No account transfer.
No licence check.
No storefront.
No server.
No password reset.
Just one person handing another person a cartridge.
It was a joke, but it worked because there is a serious point underneath it.
Evercade has built its whole identity around licensed physical cartridge collections. Boxes, manuals, shelves, curated libraries and physical ownership are central to the appeal. It is not trying to be the cheapest way to play old games. It is trying to make retro games feel collectable, organised and properly presented.
That is a very different approach from a generic handheld full of random ROMs.
It also becomes more interesting as modern platforms move further away from physical ownership. Evercade suddenly looks less like a throwback and more like a deliberate response to the direction of the wider industry.
Sega and iam8bit added to that contrast with the announcement of 35th Anniversary Legacy Cartridge releases for Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2. These are playable Genesis-compatible cartridges, priced at $99.99 each, with premium packaging, restored artwork and collector-focused extras.
They are not cheap.
They are not aimed at someone who simply wants the cheapest route to Sonic.
But that is not really the point.
The point is that classic games still have value as physical objects. A cartridge is not just a storage method. It is part of the ritual. The box, the label, the manual, the shell colour, the shelf presence and the hardware compatibility all matter to collectors.
There is also something funny about Sonic turning up on a real cartridge during the same week that PlayStation’s digital future became clearer.
That contrast sums up the split in gaming perfectly.
Mainstream gaming is chasing convenience, subscriptions, accounts and digital delivery. Retro gaming is increasingly interested in physicality, ownership, repairability and presentation.
Neither side is completely right or wrong.
Digital access has real benefits. Physical media has real limitations. But once the industry moves too far away from physical ownership, players start to notice what has been lost.
That is why retro cartridges, premium reissues and physical collections still get attention.
They are not only about playing the game.
They are about having something that exists outside an account menu.
MagicX Shows The Budget Handheld Market Is Under Pressure
The handheld side of the scene had its own reality check this week.
MagicX confirmed that the Mini Zero 28 is being discontinued, with rising DDR4 memory prices blamed for making continued production difficult. That might sound like a boring component story, but it says a lot about the state of budget retro handhelds.
Cheap handhelds are not magic.
They exist because manufacturers are balancing tiny margins, cheap chipsets, low-cost screens, available memory, shell tooling, battery costs, supplier relationships and software support. When one of those costs rises, the whole product can suddenly stop making sense.
That is what makes the budget handheld market so tricky.
People want low prices, but they also want good controls, decent screens, reliable storage, usable firmware, proper emulation performance, working HDMI output, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, clean charging, good battery life and a shell that does not feel like it came from a Christmas cracker.
Something has to give.
If RAM prices rise, manufacturers can increase the retail price, reduce the spec, change the design, use cheaper components, delay the product or cancel it completely. None of those options are ideal.
MagicX is now gauging interest in a possible Mini40, reportedly aiming for a Linux-based device with an RK3566 chipset, 1GB DDR3 RAM, a 4-inch 800x480 screen, dual speakers, dual SD card slots, Wi-Fi, vibration, HDMI output and dual Hall-effect sticks, with a suggested target price around $49 before shipping.
On paper, that could be interesting.
The RK3566 is not a miracle chip, but it can make sense in a budget Linux handheld if expectations are sensible. For 8-bit, 16-bit, arcade, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, PS1 and lighter systems, a well-configured budget device can still be excellent value.
The problem comes when budget handhelds are marketed as if they can do everything.
That is where customers get disappointed.
A £40–£60 handheld should not be expected to behave like a premium Android device. If it is honest about what it does well, it can be brilliant. If it promises systems it cannot properly run, it becomes another reason customers stop trusting spec sheets.
MagicX also appears to be exploring a separate 2DS-style handheld concept. Notebookcheck reported that the design resembles Nintendo’s 2DS and could come in two versions, one with a MediaTek Helio G99 at around $125 and another with a Dimensity 7300 at around $165. Both are expected to use active cooling and a 5-inch 768x1024 display.
That is more interesting than just another slab handheld.
The retro handheld market is crowded now. There are only so many ways to sell a small horizontal device with a d-pad, four buttons and a familiar screen size. Form factor is one of the few places manufacturers can still stand out.
A 2DS-style shape could make sense for touch-focused systems, dual-screen-inspired layouts, wider grip comfort or players who simply want something different.
But it also needs to be handled carefully.
A strange shape is not enough. The software has to be good. The screen has to make sense. The controls need to be comfortable. The device needs to justify why it exists.
That is the real takeaway from both MagicX stories.
The retro handheld market is not dead. It is just maturing.
Cheap devices need to be honest. Premium devices need to be polished. Weird devices need a reason to exist.
And customers are getting better at spotting the difference.
Dreamcast On Xbox Is Ridiculous In The Best Possible Way
One of the stranger emulation stories this week was Flycast-X, a project bringing Dreamcast emulation to the original Xbox.
Is the original Xbox suddenly the best way to play Dreamcast games?
No.
Not even close.
There are far easier ways to play Dreamcast today. A decent PC, modern Android handheld, Xbox Series machine in dev mode, Raspberry Pi-style setup, dedicated emulation box or original Dreamcast with an ODE will all make more practical sense for most people.
But practicality is not the reason this story is interesting.
The interesting bit is that someone looked at two machines from the same rough era and thought: what if we made one emulate the other?
That is exactly the kind of strange technical challenge that keeps retro gaming fun.
The Dreamcast and original Xbox both have strong enthusiast communities. The Dreamcast is loved for its arcade ports, VGA output, quirky library, homebrew scene and the way it sits between the late ’90s and early 2000s. The original Xbox is loved for its power, modding scene, hard drive, media-centre history and homebrew flexibility.
Putting Dreamcast emulation on original Xbox is not about building the perfect consumer experience.
It is about seeing what old hardware can be pushed to do.
These projects are important because they stop retro gaming from becoming too clean and predictable. Not every project needs to become a polished product. Some projects are valuable because they ask a ridiculous technical question and then try to answer it anyway.
That is how scenes grow.
Someone ports something to a machine that should not really run it. Someone else improves it. Someone else documents it. Someone else makes a video. Someone else finds a compatibility trick. Before long, an impossible-sounding idea becomes another weird corner of the hobby.
Original Xbox Dreamcast emulation may never become the best way to play anything.
But it is still worth covering because it captures something important about retro gaming.
The scene is not only about accuracy and preservation.
Sometimes it is about curiosity.
Sometimes it is about doing something because it makes absolutely no sense, then discovering it works better than expected.
PaperBoyS3 Turns E-Ink Into A Game Boy Display
PaperBoyS3 might be the most unusual hardware project of the week.
Hardware hacker Wenting Zhang turned a discontinued M5Stack PaperS3 e-ink development kit into a working Game Boy-style emulator. The device uses an ESP32-S3 microcontroller and a 960x540 e-ink display, with partial refresh techniques and dithering used to make Game Boy games playable.
That sounds ridiculous.
Which is why it is interesting.
E-ink is not normally associated with gaming. It is better known for e-readers, low-power displays, price tags, labels and projects where refresh speed is not the priority. Game Boy games are not the most demanding things in the world, but they still need responsive input and consistent screen updates.
Using an e-ink display for this kind of project immediately creates problems.
You have to deal with refresh behaviour. You have to deal with ghosting. You have to deal with limited colour or greyscale output. You have to work around a display technology that was not designed for fast-moving sprites.
That is what makes PaperBoyS3 clever.
It is not impressive because it is the best Game Boy emulator.
It is impressive because it makes unsuitable hardware behave in a way that feels surprisingly close to a playable handheld.
The project reportedly uses one CPU core for emulation while the other is heavily used for rendering and audio work. It also uses clever display handling to mimic the original Game Boy’s limited palette on a much higher-resolution e-ink screen.
There are obvious limitations.
It does not play original cartridges. The source device is discontinued. Audio is limited. It is not something most customers are going to buy off a shelf and use as their daily Game Boy machine.
But that is not the point.
The point is experimentation.
Retro gaming needs projects like this because they stop the scene from becoming just another product category. It is easy for the handheld market to fall into a pattern: same shape, same chipset, same marketing claims, same list of supported systems, same screenshots.
PaperBoyS3 is different.
It is weird. It is technical. It is imperfect. It is exactly the sort of thing that reminds people retro gaming still has a strong hacker spirit behind it.
And that matters.
Some of the best ideas in retro gaming start as experiments that look completely impractical.
An Open-Source Disc Restorer Shows Why Physical Media Still Needs Care
With all the talk about digital storefronts and physical media, one smaller preservation story landed at exactly the right time.
Dennis van den Broek, also known as PointerFunction, created the RGR ezBuff, an open-source disc polishing and resurfacing machine designed to help restore scratched or scuffed discs.
That might not sound as exciting as a new console or a rare game announcement.
But from a preservation point of view, it is incredibly relevant.
Physical media only matters if it still works.
That sounds obvious, but it is easy to forget. Discs are not invincible. PlayStation, PlayStation 2, Dreamcast, GameCube, Xbox, Xbox 360, PC, Saturn, Mega CD and countless other disc-based systems all depend on optical media that can be damaged by scratches, poor handling, bad storage, cracked cases, label-side damage, disc rot, manufacturing issues and failing drives.
Some damage cannot be fixed.
If the data layer is damaged, if disc rot has taken hold, or if the media itself is failing internally, no polishing machine is going to magically bring it back.
But many discs fail because of surface scratches, scuffs and contaminants that can sometimes be improved. That is where a tool like the RGR ezBuff becomes interesting.
The fact that it is open-source matters too.
Commercial resurfacing machines can be expensive, and some systems rely on proprietary consumables or paid operating time. An open-source, printable, repairable option gives collectors and repairers more control.
That fits perfectly with the wider retro scene.
The best retro repair tools are not only about saving money. They are about independence. They let people maintain hardware and media without being completely dependent on closed systems, discontinued parts or overpriced specialist equipment.

If new physical discs become less common, the discs already in circulation become more important. That means cleaning, storing, resurfacing and preserving them properly becomes part of the hobby.

Castlevania & GoldenEye Show Why Recompilation Matters
Recompilation continues to be one of the most exciting areas in game preservation, and this week brought another strong example.
The Xbox Live Arcade version of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night has received the recompilation treatment through NocturneRecomp. Built on the ReXGlue SDK, the project converts the Xbox 360 PowerPC executable into native x86_64 code at build time, then wraps it with a host runtime so the game can run on Windows and Linux more like a native PC port.
That sentence sounds technical, but the idea is fairly simple.
Traditional emulation tries to recreate the original machine.
Recompilation tries to translate a specific game so modern hardware can run it more directly.
Those are different approaches, and both are valuable.
Emulation is essential because it preserves systems. A good emulator helps preserve not just one game, but a whole platform: its quirks, timing, graphics behaviour, audio, controller handling and compatibility problems.
Recompilation is more targeted. It focuses on a specific game or build and gives it a new route onto modern hardware.
That can bring major benefits.
A recompiled game may become easier to run on modern operating systems. It may support modern controllers more cleanly. It may become easier to mod. It may gain widescreen support, improved performance, better frame pacing, accessibility improvements or modern display options.
But there is also an important line to draw.
These projects should not be confused with handing out games for free. The Castlevania recompilation does not include the original game code, data or assets. Users need their own copy to build it.
That distinction matters.
Done properly, recompilation can sit in a useful space between preservation, modding and modern compatibility. Done badly, it can quickly become a rights problem.
GoldenEye 007 also fits into this wider trend, even though that story landed just outside this exact seven-day window. The cancelled Xbox 360 version was recently recompiled for PC, with the developer describing it as a native executable rather than an emulator. Tom’s Hardware reported support for modern Windows controllers, online multiplayer, widescreen options, post-FX filters and 60 FPS performance claims.
That is fascinating, but also more complicated.
Unlike a publicly released game, the Xbox 360 version of GoldenEye was cancelled and never officially released. That makes the preservation conversation more awkward, because the files involved are not something normal players can simply buy from a shop.
Even so, the technical direction is important.
We are now seeing more classic games move from “can this be emulated?” to “can this be rebuilt, recompiled, ported, improved and maintained as modern software?”
That is a major shift.
It does not replace original hardware. It does not replace emulation. It does not remove the value of cartridges, discs or FPGA projects.
It simply adds another route.
And for long-term preservation, having more than one route matters.
A game that can run on original hardware, through emulation, through FPGA-style hardware recreation and through a carefully built native port has a better chance of surviving than one trapped in a single fragile format.
That is why recompilation is worth watching.
It could become one of the defining preservation tools of the next decade.
Germany’s Huge Game Archive Project Collapses
Not all preservation news this week was positive.
Germany’s Internationale Computerspielesammlung, or ICS, has reportedly collapsed after funding dried up. The project aimed to pool more than 60,000 games from museums, Germany’s game-ratings authority, industry bodies and academic partners into what could have become one of the world’s largest publicly accessible game archives.
That is a huge loss.
It is also a reminder that game preservation needs more than passion.
It needs infrastructure.
It needs storage.
It needs staff.
It needs cataloguing.
It needs legal clarity.
It needs hardware expertise.
It needs software expertise.
It needs long-term funding.
A private collector can preserve a lot, and the retro community is full of people doing incredible work from spare rooms, garages, repair benches and small workshops. But national-scale preservation is different.
If you want to preserve tens of thousands of games properly, you need more than shelves.
You need databases. You need metadata. You need version tracking. You need media condition records. You need hardware capable of reading old formats. You need controlled storage. You need researchers who understand regional variants, prototypes, patches, manuals, packaging, peripherals and platform-specific quirks.
You also need a plan for access.
A game archive that nobody can study is only half useful. Preservation is not just locking things away. It is making sure future researchers, developers, historians and players can understand what was preserved and why it mattered.
That is where funding becomes brutal.
Everyone likes the idea of preserving games. Fewer people want to pay for the boring, permanent, unglamorous work that makes preservation possible.
The timing of this story could not be more pointed.
In the same week that PlayStation announced major moves away from physical media and confirmed PS3/Vita store closure plans, a major public game archive project ran into the reality that preservation costs money.
That should worry anyone who cares about gaming history.
If physical games are declining, digital stores are closing and archive projects are struggling, then the gap between “games exist” and “games are properly preserved” gets wider.
That gap is where history disappears.
Tetris, Lost Arcade Racers & The Weird Side Of Retro Culture
Not every retro gaming story this week was about discs, archives and preservation law.
Some of it was just weird.
And that is good.
First, Tetris is getting a CG animated series called Tetris: World Builders. TeamTO and The Tetris Company announced the project as a 52 x 11-minute adventure series for children aged 6 and up, built around creativity, teamwork, problem-solving and STEAM-inspired ideas.
On paper, adapting Tetris into an animated series sounds almost impossible.
There is no obvious main character.
There is no obvious villain.
There is no obvious story world.
There are just falling blocks.
That is what makes it interesting.
Tetris is one of the most recognisable games ever made, but it is also one of the most abstract. Turning it into a character-driven animated world requires the creators to build almost everything around the shape language and philosophy of the game rather than adapting a normal plot.
Whether that works or not remains to be seen.
But it shows how far classic game brands now stretch beyond the machines they started on. Tetris is no longer just a puzzle game. It is a global brand, a competitive scene, a design language, a documentary subject, a merchandise line and now a children’s animated series.
That is what happens when a game becomes bigger than its platform.
Another strange story involved 90’s Arcade Racer, a long-lost arcade racing project first shown back in 2013 as a love letter to games like Daytona USA and Scud Race.
The project had crowdfunding attention, changed names to 90’s Super GP, was linked to modern platforms, and then slowly became one of those “whatever happened to that?” games.
Now, elements of that idea appear to have resurfaced inside Takeover 2, a side-scrolling fighter from Antonis Pelekanos. A bonus mini-game called Overtake appears to act as a spiritual successor to the abandoned racer concept.
That is odd.
But it is also very retro.
Gaming history is full of projects that do not disappear cleanly. They get renamed, reworked, folded into other games, recycled, revived, rebuilt or referenced years later. Assets survive. Ideas survive. Mechanics survive. Sometimes the original game never appears, but pieces of it leave a trail.
That makes the story interesting even if it is not the clean comeback fans might have wanted.
There is something very familiar about a 2013 arcade racer resurfacing as a bonus game inside a different project in 2026.
It is messy, strange and slightly frustrating.
Exactly like a lot of game history.
The 3DO Comeback Already Looks Dead
Finally, the 3DO had one of the strangest retro brand stories of the week.
For a brief moment, it looked like there might be an attempt to bring the 3DO name back. Empire Interactive claimed involvement with the 3DO brand and suggested possible future plans, including hardware discussion.
Then the rights situation became messy almost immediately.
According to Time Extension, Empire Interactive has now withdrawn from the 3DO project due to multiple parties claiming ownership rights over both games and the console manufacturing process. The company cited the likelihood of prolonged legal disputes and said it would instead focus on developing its own next-generation games.
That is about as 3DO as a 3DO comeback could get.
The original 3DO was already a strange machine. It was ambitious, expensive, multimedia-focused and built around a licensing model that allowed multiple manufacturers to produce hardware. Panasonic, GoldStar and Sanyo all made 3DO systems, which was interesting on paper but complicated in practice.
It never really competed with Sega, Nintendo and Sony in the way its backers hoped.
More than 30 years later, even trying to revive the brand seems to run into the same kind of fragmentation.
That is the problem with retro brand revivals.
The name might be memorable, but the rights can be anything but simple.
Who owns the trademark?
Who owns the software?
Who owns the hardware rights?
Who controls manufacturing rights?
Who owns individual game IP?
Who owns publishing rights?
Who owns source code, artwork, manuals, branding and regional material?
For famous platforms, those questions can sometimes be clear. For old, complicated, commercially messy systems, they can be a nightmare.
That does not mean no old brand should ever come back.
But it does mean a good retro revival needs more than a familiar name and a press statement.
It needs clear rights, a believable product, proper technical planning, access to software, a realistic market and a reason for players to care.
Without that, it becomes another retro headline that sounds exciting for about five minutes before collapsing into questions.
The 3DO deserved better than that.
But somehow, the chaos also feels weirdly appropriate.
The Bottom Line
This week’s retro gaming news had one clear theme running through it.
Access is fragile.
Digital stores can close.
Physical media can disappear from new releases.
Archives can lose funding.
Old brands can get trapped in rights disputes.
Cheap handhelds can be squeezed by component prices.
Discs can scratch.
Old games can become harder to buy, harder to repair, harder to research and harder to preserve.
But there was plenty of good news too.
Collectors are still getting physical cartridges.
Evercade is still making the case for boxed, licensed game collections.
Hardware hackers are still making strange devices do things they were never designed to do.
Developers are still pushing emulation onto unexpected machines.
Open-source tools are helping people repair and preserve physical media.
Recompilation projects are giving old games new technical routes into the future.
And the retro scene is still full of people who care enough to question what happens next.
That is why retro gaming remains interesting in 2026.
It is not just about replaying the past.
It is about keeping the past usable.
It is about repair, restoration, access, ownership and preservation.
It is about making sure old games do not become locked behind dead accounts, broken hardware, missing archives or rights disputes nobody wants to untangle.
Sometimes that means buying a physical cartridge.
Sometimes it means replacing a battery.
Sometimes it means resurfacing a disc.
Sometimes it means dumping your own games.
Sometimes it means supporting preservation groups.
Sometimes it means building ridiculous e-ink Game Boys just to prove it can be done.
That is the real story.
Retro gaming is not stuck in the past.
It is constantly being rebuilt, repaired, reissued, reworked, challenged and protected.
And if this week proved anything, it is that the work is far from finished.
