Description
Description
Add removable SD card storage to your Sony PlayStation 2 with the MX4SIO SD Card Adapter, designed for use with Open PS2 Loader and compatible PS2 softmod setups.
MX4SIO connects directly to the PlayStation 2 memory-card interface and allows compatible homebrew software to communicate with an SD card through the console's SIO2 bus. This provides an alternative storage method for PS2 software without installing an internal hard drive, modifying the motherboard or relying on the console's slower USB 1.1 ports.
The adapter itself does not softmod the PlayStation 2 and cannot launch software on a completely vanilla console by itself. The PS2 must first have a compatible method of launching homebrew software such as Free MCBoot, OpenTuna, FunTuna, FreeDVDBoot or another supported exploit.
A common setup uses a Free MCBoot or compatible softmod memory card in one memory-card slot and the MX4SIO adapter in the other. Once Open PS2 Loader has launched, its MX4SIO / BDM support allows compatible software stored on the SD card to be accessed directly through the memory-card interface.
MX4SIO can provide significantly faster data access than loading from the PlayStation 2's built-in USB 1.1 ports. This can improve loading times and reduce the audio or full-motion-video stuttering commonly associated with USB-based OPL setups, although performance still varies between individual games.
Open PS2 Loader, commonly known as OPL, provides the software interface used to access the SD card. Compatible PlayStation 2 disc images can be organised within the appropriate CD and DVD folders and selected from the OPL interface.
Compatible OPL builds support FAT32-formatted SD cards, while newer versions can also support exFAT. exFAT is particularly useful for larger PlayStation 2 disc images because it removes the 4GB individual-file-size limitation associated with FAT32.
The adapter should not be confused with a conventional PlayStation 2 memory card. Although MX4SIO connects through the same physical memory-card slot, it is designed as a high-capacity storage interface rather than standard game-save memory.
A separate genuine or compatible PlayStation 2 memory card can therefore be used in the other slot for conventional game saves. Compatible OPL virtual-memory-card features may also be available for supported titles, but these are software functions rather than native MX4SIO save-memory functionality.
Free MCBoot is one of the most common ways to launch OPL on compatible PlayStation 2 hardware. Insert a configured FMCB memory card, start the console and launch Open PS2 Loader before accessing the MX4SIO storage.
Some later SCPH-9xxxx PlayStation 2 Slim consoles use a revised ROM that prevents standard Free MCBoot from automatically launching. These consoles may instead require a compatible alternative such as OpenTuna or FunTuna.
FreeDVDBoot can also provide a software-only route into the PS2 homebrew environment on compatible consoles using a prepared DVD, providing another option where a conventional Free MCBoot setup is unavailable.
Because MX4SIO is completely external, no soldering, console disassembly or permanent hardware modification is required. Insert the adapter into a memory-card slot, prepare a compatible SD card and configure Open PS2 Loader for MX4SIO / BDM storage.
For PS2 Slim owners in particular, MX4SIO provides a convenient alternative to an internal hard-drive installation. It is equally useful on compatible PS2 Fat consoles where removable solid-state storage is preferred over the traditional expansion-bay HDD setup.
For anyone looking for a simple PlayStation 2 OPL storage solution, MX4SIO provides faster access than USB storage while retaining a completely external, removable and reversible installation.
