This RetroScaler BlueRetro Sega Saturn Bluetooth Controller Adapter connects compatible modern Bluetooth controllers to original Sega Saturn consoles.

The compact black wireless controller receiver plugs directly into a Saturn controller port, providing wireless control without permanently modifying the console or requiring a separate power supply.

The adapter uses an ESP32-based implementation of the open-source BlueRetro hardware and software platform to translate compatible Bluetooth controller inputs into Sega Saturn controller commands.

Compatible controllers include official Sony DualShock 3, DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers, Bluetooth-enabled Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S controllers, Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers and Joy-Con, Wii Remotes, Wii U Pro Controllers and selected 8BitDo, Retro-Bit and Bluetooth HID controllers.

BlueRetro provides Sega Saturn 3D Control Pad emulation with both digital and analogue output modes. The connected controller’s mapped Home or Guide button can switch between these two gamepad modes. Saturn keyboard and mouse output modes are also available with compatible input hardware and the correct BlueRetro configuration.

BlueRetro emulates a Saturn 3D Control Pad rather than a standard Saturn Control Pad. Games that do not support the original 3D Control Pad may therefore not operate correctly. Golden Axe: The Duel is a documented example.

Controller rumble is not supported. Sega proposed a rumble accessory for the Saturn 3D Control Pad, but it was never commercially released and is not part of the Saturn controller interface emulated by BlueRetro.

The BlueRetro platform provides responsive, low-latency wireless input. Actual end-to-end latency, button mapping and controller behaviour can vary according to the connected controller, its operating mode, installed firmware and surrounding wireless conditions.

Button assignments and Saturn output modes can be adjusted through BlueRetro Web Config using a compatible Chrome-based browser. Firmware can also be updated over the air, but only firmware explicitly confirmed for this exact adapter and hardware revision should be installed.

The adapter is powered directly through the Sega Saturn controller port and does not require a separate power supply or console modification.

First-Time Pairing

1. Switch the Sega Saturn off.
2. Connect the BlueRetro adapter to the required controller port.
3. Switch the console on. The adapter’s red LED should begin flashing to indicate that Bluetooth pairing mode is active.
4. Place the supported Bluetooth controller into its pairing mode.
5. Wait for the controller and adapter to connect. The adapter’s blue LED should remain illuminated after a successful connection.
6. Test the directional controls, buttons and required digital or analogue mode before starting a game.
7. Once pairing information has been stored, the controller can normally reconnect by being switched on again.
8. Always switch the Sega Saturn off before removing or changing the adapter.

Adapter Button Functions

Brief Press While Connected: Disconnects the connected Bluetooth controller.
Brief Press During Pairing: Cancels Bluetooth pairing mode.
Hold For Approximately 3 Seconds: Starts pairing mode for a new controller.
Hold For Approximately 10 Seconds: Restores the adapter’s default configuration and clears its stored Bluetooth pairing keys. The installed firmware is not removed.

LED Indicator

Flashing Red LED: Bluetooth pairing mode is active.
Constant Blue LED: A controller is connected successfully.
Constant Red LED: A Bluetooth or adapter error has occurred. Switch the console off, check the connection and restart the adapter.

Switching Between Digital & Analogue Modes

BlueRetro provides Sega Saturn 3D Control Pad emulation in digital and analogue output modes.

Use the connected controller’s mapped Home or Guide function to switch between the two modes.

Select the appropriate mode for the game being played. Games without support for the original Saturn 3D Control Pad may not recognise the adapter correctly.

Using BlueRetro Web Config

1. Switch the Sega Saturn on with the adapter connected.
2. Ensure that no Bluetooth controller is currently connected to the adapter.
3. Open the official BlueRetro Web Config using Chrome or another compatible Chromium-based browser on a desktop or Android device.
4. Connect to the adapter through Web Bluetooth.
5. Configure button mappings, analogue settings, output modes and other compatible options as required.
6. Disconnect from BlueRetro Web Config before pairing a controller.

Firmware Updating

The adapter can be updated through the official BlueRetro OTA Firmware Updater while powered and with no controller connected.

Only install firmware explicitly confirmed as compatible with this exact RetroScaler Sega Saturn adapter and hardware revision. Installing incompatible firmware or interrupting an update can leave the adapter unresponsive and is not covered by the Retrolize warranty.

This RetroScaler BlueRetro Sega Saturn Bluetooth Controller Adapter is covered by a 12-month Retrolize warranty against manufacturing defects and hardware faults arising during normal use from the date of delivery.

The warranty does not cover accidental damage, liquid damage, forced insertion, hot plugging, unauthorised modification, incorrectly performed or interrupted firmware updates, or firmware not explicitly confirmed as compatible with this exact adapter model. An adapter rendered unresponsive or unusable—commonly referred to as “bricked”—as a result of any such firmware update is not covered by the Retrolize warranty.

Compatibility differences caused by unsupported controllers, proprietary 2.4GHz receivers, third-party controller firmware, individual games or unsupported operating modes are not considered product faults.

Warranty claims remain subject to the full Retrolize warranty terms and are additional to the user’s statutory rights.
