This RetroScaler BlueRetro Atari 2600 Bluetooth Controller Adapter connects selected modern Bluetooth controllers to an original Atari Video Computer System or Atari 2600 console. The compact wireless receiver connects to a standard 9-pin controller port, providing plug and play with no console modification required and drawing power from the console.

Built around the ESP32-based BlueRetro platform, the adapter translates compatible Bluetooth controller inputs into the digital directions and primary fire-button command used by a standard Atari 2600 joystick. It is designed for games that use this joystick interface.

First-Time Pairing

1. Switch the Atari 2600 off.
2. Connect the BlueRetro adapter to the required controller port. Use the included 9-pin extension cable if needed for access.
3. Switch the console on. The adapter should enter pairing mode.
4. If pairing mode is not active, use the adapter’s BOOT control according to the supplied instruction booklet.
5. Place the supported Bluetooth controller into its pairing mode, using the correct operating mode for that model.
6. Wait for the controller and adapter to connect.
7. Test the directional controls and mapped fire button with a game that uses a standard joystick.
8. Once pairing information has been stored, the controller can normally reconnect by being switched on again.
9. Always switch the Atari 2600 off before removing or changing the adapter.

Using BlueRetro Web Config

2. Ensure that no Bluetooth controller is currently connected to the adapter.
3. Open BlueRetro Web Config using a compatible Chrome-based browser on a Bluetooth-enabled computer or Android device with Web Bluetooth support.
4. Connect to the adapter through the browser.
5. Configure the directional inputs and primary fire-button mapping as required.
6. Save the changes.
7. Disconnect the browser session, reconnect the controller and test the controls.

Digital Direction And Fire-Button Mapping

Map suitable controller inputs to the Atari joystick’s Up, Down, Left, Right and Fire functions.

An analogue stick can be used as the source for digital directions. The game still receives digital joystick commands rather than variable analogue movement.

Additional buttons on the Bluetooth controller can be assigned to supported functions, but the adapter does not add extra game actions beyond those accepted by the original Atari joystick interface.

Adapter Button And Reset Behaviour

Use the BOOT button as described in the instruction booklet for the adapter and its installed firmware.

Firmware Updating

The adapter supports updating through the BlueRetro OTA Firmware Updater while powered and with no Bluetooth controller connected.

Only use a firmware file explicitly confirmed as compatible with this exact RetroScaler Atari 2600 adapter. Keep the adapter powered throughout the update and wait for the updater to complete before disconnecting or switching off the console.

Connection & Control Troubleshooting

Controller Will Not Pair: Check that it supports Bluetooth, is using the correct operating mode and is actively pairing. Disconnect it from another device if necessary.

Web Config Cannot Find The Adapter: Disconnect the controller first. Check that Bluetooth is enabled and that the browser supports Web Bluetooth.

Directions Or Fire Do Not Work: Check the input mapping and test with a game designed for a standard Atari joystick. Paddle, driving and keypad games require different controller functions.

Analogue Stick Does Not Centre Correctly: Leave sticks and triggers untouched while connecting. With supported Xbox and XInput devices, press a face button a few times after connection while the sticks and triggers remain neutral.

Controller Connects But A Paddle Game Does Not Respond Correctly: This adapter does not emulate paddle input. Use the controller type required by the game.
