The RetroScaler BlueRetro Sega Mega Drive & Genesis Bluetooth Controller Adapter connects selected modern Bluetooth controllers to original Sega Mega Drive Model 1, Mega Drive Model 2, Genesis Model 1 and Genesis Model 2 consoles. This compact wireless receiver connects through the console’s original 9-pin controller port, providing wireless control without permanently modifying the console or requiring a separate power supply.

Built around the open-source BlueRetro platform and ESP32 hardware, the adapter translates compatible Bluetooth controller inputs into the commands expected by the original console. Standard 3-button output provides the D-pad, A, B, C and Start controls. Selectable 6-button output adds X, Y, Z and Mode for games supporting the expanded controller layout.

With the default mapping, the connected controller’s mapped Home function switches between 3-button and 6-button output. The modes can also be selected through BlueRetro Web Config. This lets you use the additional controls in compatible games while retaining a standard 3-button option for titles that need it.

Supported controller options include official Sony DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers, Bluetooth-enabled Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S controllers, Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers and Joy-Con, Wii Remotes and Wii U Pro Controllers. Official DualShock 3 and Sixaxis controllers are also supported with additional first-time pairing setup. Selected 8BitDo, Retro-Bit and Bluetooth HID controllers can be used, with compatibility depending on the exact model, firmware and operating mode.

The supported 8BitDo M30 Bluetooth model offers a six-face-button layout suited to Mega Drive and Genesis controls. Other compatible controllers can also be used, with button assignments adjusted to suit their layouts. Bluetooth support is essential: proprietary 2.4GHz-only controllers cannot connect to this receiver.

BlueRetro provides responsive, low-latency wireless input. Actual end-to-end latency and controller behaviour can vary according to the connected controller, its operating mode, installed firmware and surrounding wireless conditions.

BlueRetro Web Config provides browser-based control over button assignments and supported output modes using a compatible Bluetooth-equipped device. The adapter also offers optional Genesis Mouse emulation with compatible input hardware, the Default Mouse preset and software supporting the original peripheral. Firmware can be updated over the air using a build confirmed as compatible with this exact adapter.

A 9-pin controller extension cable is included, allowing more convenient positioning and access to the receiver. One adapter connects one wireless controller; compatible two-player games require a separate adapter for each player.

Compatible Controller Required: A supported Bluetooth controller is required and is not included. Compatibility can vary between controller models, hardware revisions, firmware versions and operating modes.

One Adapter Per Controller: Each adapter connects one wireless controller. A separate adapter and available console controller port are required for every wireless player. Up to two adapters can be connected directly to the console.

Default 3-Button Mode: Standard GamePad output emulates a 3-button controller with the D-pad, A, B, C and Start controls.

Six-Button Mode: GamePadAlt output emulates a 6-button controller, adding X, Y, Z and Mode for compatible games. The connected controller needs suitable inputs and an appropriate button mapping.

Switching Controller Modes: With the default BlueRetro mapping, the mapped Home function toggles between 3-button and 6-button output. The physical button providing this function depends on the controller and its mapping. The Home mode-switching function is separate from the emulated Mega Drive Mode button.

Game Compatibility: Use 3-button mode for games designed around the original standard controller or if a game behaves incorrectly in 6-button mode. Use 6-button mode for compatible games requiring the additional inputs.

Controller Mapping: Physical button positions and labels vary between Bluetooth controllers. Controls can be remapped through BlueRetro Web Config if the default layout is unsuitable.

Bluetooth Controllers Only: Controllers that operate exclusively through a proprietary 2.4GHz receiver or USB dongle cannot connect through Bluetooth. For controllers with multiple connection modes, use the supported Bluetooth mode.

Xbox Compatibility: Xbox Series X|S and Bluetooth-enabled Xbox One controllers are supported. Xbox 360 controllers and original Xbox One controllers without Bluetooth are not supported.

PlayStation 3 Pairing: Official Sony DualShock 3 and Sixaxis controllers require additional first-time setup using a compatible computer. Follow the official BlueRetro Controller Pairing Guide.

Genesis Mouse Mode: This requires compatible Bluetooth input hardware, Mouse output mode, the Default Mouse preset and software supporting the original Genesis Mouse. It does not add mouse controls to every game.

Controller Rumble: Not supported by this adapter’s Mega Drive and Genesis output.

Keyboard Output: Genesis keyboard output is not currently supported by BlueRetro.

Hot Plugging: Always switch the Mega Drive or Genesis off before inserting, removing or changing the adapter or extension cable.

First-Time Pairing

1. Switch the Mega Drive or Genesis off.
2. Connect the BlueRetro adapter to the required controller port, using the supplied 9-pin extension cable if needed.
3. Switch the console on. The adapter should enter pairing mode.
4. If pairing mode does not begin automatically, use the adapter’s pairing control as described in the supplied instruction booklet.
5. Place the supported Bluetooth controller into its pairing mode, using the correct operating mode for that model.
6. Wait for the controller and adapter to connect.
7. Test the directional controls, A, B, C and Start before starting a game.
8. Select 6-button output when required and check the additional X, Y, Z and Mode inputs.
9. Once pairing information has been stored, the controller can normally reconnect by being switched on again.
10. Always switch the console off before removing or changing the adapter.

Controller-Specific Pairing Information

DualShock 4: With the controller switched off, hold Share + PS until its light flashes.

DualSense: With the controller switched off, hold Create + PS until its light flashes.

Xbox Controllers: Switch the supported controller on and use its pairing button. It must be a Bluetooth-enabled model.

Nintendo Switch Controllers: Use the controller’s physical SYNC button to start pairing.

8BitDo Bluetooth Controllers: Use the supported operating mode for the exact model. The documented 8BitDo M30 Bluetooth model uses XInput mode. Its 2.4G versions are different products and cannot connect to this adapter through Bluetooth.

Retro-Bit Bluetooth Controllers: Use the supported operating mode for the exact model, as documented in the official BlueRetro pairing guide.

DualShock 3 & Sixaxis: Complete the additional Bluetooth-address setup described in the BlueRetro Controller Pairing Guide.

Keep analogue sticks and triggers in their neutral positions while connecting. With supported Xbox and XInput devices, press a face button a few times after connection while leaving the sticks and triggers untouched.

Using 3-Button & 6-Button Modes

GamePad: Emulates a standard 3-button Mega Drive or Genesis controller with the D-pad, A, B, C and Start controls.

GamePadAlt: Emulates a 6-button controller, adding X, Y, Z and Mode for compatible games.

Mode Shortcut: The connected controller’s mapped Home function toggles between these two gamepad modes with the default BlueRetro mapping.

Use the output mode appropriate to the game. If an older game behaves incorrectly in 6-button mode, return to 3-button mode and restart the game if required.

You can also select the required output mode through BlueRetro Web Config. Check the mapping if the connected controller has no accessible Home function or if its physical layout does not match the Mega Drive button arrangement.

Using BlueRetro Web Config

1. Switch the Mega Drive or Genesis on with the adapter connected.
2. Ensure that no Bluetooth controller is currently connected to the adapter.
3. Open BlueRetro Web Config using a compatible Chrome-based browser on a Bluetooth-enabled computer or Android device with Web Bluetooth support.
4. Connect to the adapter through the browser.
5. Configure button assignments and output modes as required.
6. Select GamePad for 3-button output or GamePadAlt for 6-button output.
7. Save the changes.
8. Disconnect the browser session and reconnect the controller.
9. Test the controls and selected output mode before playing.

Optional Sega Genesis Mouse Mode

Mouse Emulation: Select Mouse output and the Default Mouse preset, using compatible Bluetooth input hardware. The game must support the original Genesis Mouse.

1. Power the adapter through the console with no Bluetooth controller connected.
2. Open BlueRetro Web Config using a compatible browser.
3. Select Mouse as the output mode.
4. Load the Default Mouse preset.
5. Save the configuration and disconnect the browser session.
6. Pair a compatible Bluetooth mouse or pointing device.
7. Test it with software designed to support the original Genesis Mouse.

Mouse is an alternative output mode. Selecting it changes the type of peripheral emulated through the controller port. Restore GamePad or GamePadAlt output for controller use.

Adapter Button And Reset Behaviour

Use the adapter button according to the supplied instruction booklet and the installed firmware.

Pairing and reset behaviour can differ between firmware versions. A configuration reset must not be assumed to restore the original firmware supplied with the adapter. Contact Retrolize if you need help resetting or recovering the unit.

Firmware Updating

The adapter supports updating through the BlueRetro OTA Firmware Updater while powered by the console and with no Bluetooth controller connected.

Only use firmware explicitly confirmed as compatible with this exact RetroScaler Mega Drive and Genesis adapter and hardware revision. Keep the adapter powered throughout the update and wait for the updater to complete before switching off the console.

Installing incompatible firmware or interrupting an update can leave the adapter unresponsive and is not covered by the Retrolize warranty.

Connection & Control Troubleshooting

Controller Will Not Pair: Check that it supports Bluetooth, is using the correct operating mode and is actively pairing. Disconnect it from another device if necessary.

Previously Paired Controller Will Not Reconnect: Close any active BlueRetro Web Config or OTA connection, switch the console off and restart it. Switch the controller on again. If necessary, repeat the pairing procedure using the supplied instructions.

Web Config Cannot Find The Adapter: Disconnect the controller first. Check that Bluetooth is enabled and that the browser supports Web Bluetooth. Close other configuration or updater sessions before retrying.

Only Three Face Buttons Work: Check that GamePadAlt output is selected for 6-button operation. Confirm that X, Y, Z and Mode are mapped to suitable inputs and that the game supports the additional controls.

Home Does Not Switch Controller Modes: Check which physical button provides the mapped Home function. This is separate from the emulated Mega Drive Mode button. Select GamePad or GamePadAlt directly through Web Config if needed.

An Older Game Has Unusual Controls: Return to GamePad output for standard 3-button operation and restart the game if required.

Button Layout Is Incorrect: Check the controller’s operating mode and adjust the assignments through BlueRetro Web Config. Save the changes and disconnect the browser session before reconnecting the controller.

This RetroScaler BlueRetro Sega Mega Drive & Genesis Bluetooth Controller Adapter is covered by a 12-month Retrolize warranty against manufacturing defects and hardware faults arising during normal use from the date of delivery.

M30 2.4G versions use a different connection system and cannot pair with this receiver through Bluetooth.

Does The Adapter Support Six-Button Games?
