Upgrade an original Nintendo Game Boy DMG-01 with a larger laminated IPS display, USB-C rechargeable power and a complete Classic Grey replacement shell.

This Game Boy DMG-01 conversion kit uses a 3.1-inch Hispeedido Q5 IPS display with an approximately 11% larger viewing area than the original screen. Integer scaling reproduces each original Game Boy pixel using a precise block of display pixels, creating a sharp image without uneven scaling or distortion.

The built-in OSD provides eight adjustable colour modes alongside a switchable Retro Pixel grid effect, FRM frame blending, image-position adjustment and an optional on-screen battery indicator. The wide-viewing-angle IPS panel also provides improved brightness, contrast and visibility compared with an ageing original Game Boy LCD.

A 3000mAh rechargeable battery and USB-C charging system replace disposable AA batteries for everyday use. Battery life varies with brightness, visual effects, volume and individual playing conditions.

The supplied Classic Grey shell recreates the familiar appearance of the original Game Boy while accommodating the larger laminated display and rechargeable power system. The kit also includes the screen driver hardware, speaker, buttons, silicone membranes and motherboard connection cable required for the conversion.

Simply transfer a compatible original Game Boy DMG-01 motherboard into the supplied assembly. No soldering or shell cutting is required for a normal installation.

Because the conversion retains the original donor motherboard, games continue to run from original compatible Game Boy cartridges using original hardware. This is not an emulation handheld.

Not A Complete Console: This is a display, shell and rechargeable power conversion kit. It does not include a complete Game Boy, motherboard, game cartridge or games.

Original DMG-01 Only: The kit is designed for the original full-size Game Boy DMG-01. It is not compatible with Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Light, Game Boy Advance or Game Boy Advance SP motherboards.

Pre-Assembled Conversion Kit: The screen, driver hardware, speaker, controls and shell components may arrive pre-assembled, but the customer must transfer and connect a compatible original motherboard.

No Soldering Or Shell Cutting: Normal installation does not require soldering or modification of the supplied shell. Repairs to a damaged donor motherboard may still require soldering and suitable technical experience.

Motherboard Condition: Original DMG-01 motherboards are now several decades old. Inspect and test the motherboard before installation. Replacement of ageing or failed capacitors is recommended where required.

Installation Care: Do not force the ribbon cable, connectors, shell or motherboard. Avoid trapping cables and do not overtighten the shell screws. Damage caused during installation is not covered by the warranty.

USB-C Charging: Use a suitable, properly regulated USB power source and good-quality cable that meet the battery pack’s charging requirements. Do not use damaged, poorly regulated or incompatible chargers.

Battery Performance: Operating time varies according to screen brightness, display effects, sound level, battery condition and individual use.

Installation Overview

1. Test the donor Game Boy DMG-01 motherboard before dismantling the original console.
2. Switch the console off and remove the batteries, power adapter and game cartridge.
3. Carefully open the donor console and remove its original motherboard.
4. Inspect and clean the motherboard, controls and cartridge connector as required.
5. Position the motherboard inside the supplied shell assembly.
6. Connect the supplied motherboard ribbon cable without twisting, creasing or forcing it.
7. Check that all controls, cables and shell components are positioned correctly.
8. Test the display, sound, controls, cartridge reader and USB-C charging system before fully tightening the shell.
9. Complete the assembly and use the display controls to select the preferred brightness, colour mode and visual settings.

Original Game Boy DMG-01 motherboard, game cartridges, games and complete console are not included.

This Nintendo Game Boy DMG-01 IPS Display & USB-C Conversion Kit is covered by a 12-month limited Retrolize warranty against manufacturing defects and hardware faults arising during normal use.

The warranty applies to the components supplied as part of the conversion kit. It does not cover faults affecting the customer-supplied motherboard, game cartridges, accessories or other original hardware.

The warranty does not cover accidental damage, liquid damage, cracked or pressure-damaged screens, damaged ribbon cables, forced connections, overtightened screws, incorrect assembly, installation damage, unauthorised modification or faults caused by unsuitable tools.

Damage caused by an unsuitable charger, cable, power supply or adapter is not covered. This includes damage caused by excessive voltage or current, incompatible fast-charging modes, poor voltage regulation or operation outside the battery pack’s stated charging requirements.

Normal battery-capacity changes arising through age and use are not considered manufacturing defects. Display or operational problems caused by corrosion, ageing capacitors, damaged contacts or another fault within the donor motherboard are also not considered faults with the conversion kit.

Retrolize may require the complete assembled console for inspection where necessary to determine whether a fault originates from the supplied kit or the customer’s donor hardware.

Warranty claims remain subject to the full Retrolize warranty terms and are additional to the customer’s statutory rights.

What Does “Just Add Your Motherboard” Mean?

The screen, shell, controls, speaker, rechargeable battery and display hardware are supplied as part of the kit. A working original Game Boy DMG-01 motherboard must be transferred from a donor console to complete the build.

Is A Game Boy Motherboard Included?

No. A compatible original Nintendo Game Boy DMG-01 motherboard is required and must be supplied separately.

Is This A Complete Game Boy Console?

No. This is a conversion kit rather than a complete console. It does not include a motherboard, game cartridge or games.

Does Installation Require Soldering?

No soldering is required for a normal installation with a working compatible motherboard. Any repairs required by the donor motherboard may still involve soldering.

Does The Supplied Shell Need Cutting?

No. The Classic Grey replacement shell is prepared for the supplied laminated Q5 IPS display and USB-C rechargeable battery system.

How Large Is The IPS Display?

What Does Integer Scaling Do?

Integer scaling recreates each original Game Boy pixel using an evenly sized block of display pixels. This produces a sharp, correctly proportioned image without uneven pixel sizes or scaling distortion.

What Display Settings Are Available?

The built-in OSD provides eight adjustable colour modes, Retro Pixel simulation, FRM frame blending, image-position adjustment and an optional battery-level indicator.

Does The Kit Use Emulation?

No. The conversion uses an original Game Boy DMG-01 motherboard and plays compatible original cartridges through the donor hardware.

Will It Work With Other Game Boy Motherboards?

No. The kit is intended specifically for an original full-size Game Boy DMG-01 motherboard. Other Game Boy models use different boards, shells and display connections.

Should The Donor Motherboard Be Serviced First?

The motherboard should be tested and inspected before installation. Ageing capacitors, corrosion, damaged controls and cartridge-reader faults should be repaired before fitting the board into the new assembly.

How Does This Differ From A Screen-Only Kit?

A screen-only kit normally supplies the display and driver hardware. This conversion kit also includes a Classic Grey replacement shell, rechargeable battery system, controls, speaker and other components required to rebuild the console around an original motherboard.
