Original Nintendo 64 Controller Pak Memory Card NUS-004

The original Nintendo 64 Controller Pak NUS-004 is Nintendo’s removable memory card for supported N64 games. Also commonly called an N64 Memory Pak or Memory Pack, it plugs into the controller’s accessory slot to store the save data and features provided by compatible software.

Its 32KB / 256Kbit capacity provides 123 usable save pages, with a maximum of 16 game notes. Each game uses a different amount of space, so the number of titles you can store depends on their save requirements.

Supported games can use the Pak for progress, settings, created characters, records or replay data. Mario Kart 64, for example, uses it for Time Trial Ghost data; its normal cartridge save functions remain separate.

The portable format lets you take supported saves to another Nintendo 64 and continue with a compatible copy of the game. PAL, NTSC-U and NTSC-J console hardware is supported, although save files are not automatically interchangeable between different regional game releases.

Analogue 3D also officially supports original Controller Paks when used with an original N64 controller that has the required accessory slot.

Compatible Game Required: The Controller Pak works with N64 games that support this accessory. Look for the Controller Pak symbol on the game’s packaging or check its instruction booklet. It is not required for every N64 game.

Storage Capacity: The original NUS-004 has 32KB / 256Kbit of memory, providing 123 usable save pages and a maximum of 16 save files, known as game notes. Save sizes vary, so this does not guarantee space for 16 different games.

Battery-Backed Storage: The original Controller Pak uses battery-backed SRAM. Retaining saves while the console is off depends on a functioning internal battery.

Protect Your Saves: Do not switch off, reset or remove the Pak while a game is saving. Deleting files or formatting the Pak erases the affected data. Keep backups of important saves where possible.

Getting Started

1. Switch off the console.
2. Fully insert the Controller Pak into the accessory slot on the underside of the compatible controller.
3. Connect the controller to the port required by your game and insert the supported N64 game.
4. Switch on and follow the game’s save or Controller Pak instructions. Allow saving to finish before switching off.

Removing The Controller Pak

Switch off before normal removal. Hold the controller’s accessory-release button while sliding the Pak out. If a game explicitly prompts an accessory change, follow its instructions.

Managing Saved Data

Many compatible games open a Controller Pak management menu when START is held on controller 1 while the console is switched on. Other games use an in-game options menu. Check the game’s instructions, and delete only saves you intend to remove.

This original Nintendo 64 NUS-004 Controller Pak comes with a 12-month limited Retrolize warranty, starting on the date of delivery, for hardware faults that develop during normal use.

Accidental damage, liquid exposure, misuse, forced insertion and damage caused by hot plugging, unauthorised repair or modification are excluded. Normal wear and cosmetic deterioration are not covered.

Use the Pak with a supported controller and compatible software. Save-file differences between regional game releases, unsupported games or controllers, and deliberate deletion or formatting are not hardware faults.

Do I Need A Controller Pak For Every N64 Game?

No. Many games save directly to their cartridge. Others require a Controller Pak for progress or optional features. Check the game’s Controller Pak symbol and manual.

How Many Games Can It Save?

There are 123 usable pages and room for up to 16 game notes. A game may use several pages or multiple notes, so the number of games that fit varies. It is not a 123-game memory card.

Does It Work With Mario Kart 64?

Yes, for Time Trial Ghost data. Mario Kart 64 requires 121 pages for its Controller Pak data and can store two Ghost recordings. Normal gameplay does not require these Ghost saves.

Does It Work With Analogue 3D?

Yes. Analogue officially lists original Controller Pak support. Use current 3DOS and an original N64 controller with an accessory slot.

Does It Need A Battery?

The original Nintendo NUS-004 uses an internal battery to retain its SRAM save data while the console is off. It does not require a separate external power supply. Keep backups of important saves where possible.

How Do I Delete Saves Or Free Up Space?

Use a compatible game’s Controller Pak management menu. The access method varies by game; check the game’s manual. Deleting a game note removes its stored data.

Why Can It Be Full When Pages Are Still Available?

The Pak has both a 123-page storage limit and a 16-note directory limit. Reaching the note limit can prevent another file being created even when some pages remain unused.

Will It Work With A UK Nintendo 64?

Yes. The Controller Pak hardware works with UK/PAL, North American NTSC-U and Japanese NTSC-J consoles through a compatible controller. Individual save files must still match the software that reads them.

Can I Use A Third-Party Controller?

Only where the controller supports physical N64 Controller Paks. A controller without the correct working accessory slot cannot use this card. Check the exact controller model’s compatibility.

Is It The Same As An Expansion Pak Or Transfer Pak?

No. The Controller Pak stores supported N64 game saves. The Expansion Pak adds console RAM, while the Transfer Pak links supported Game Boy cartridges with N64 games.

Why Is The Card Not Being Recognised?

Check that your game supports Controller Paks, then switch off and reseat the card and controller. If the card contains saves you want to keep, contact us before accepting a format or repair prompt that could erase them.
