The Nintendo Game Boy Color OLED Rechargeable 1800mAh – Yellow Pokémon combines professionally restored original Nintendo hardware with a laminated OLED display, rechargeable battery, upgraded audio and a thorough restoration process. Its yellow replacement shell, blue D-pad and contrasting coloured A/B buttons give this build a distinctive Pokémon-inspired appearance.

At the centre of every console is an original Nintendo Game Boy Color motherboard. Each system is fully disassembled, inspected, cleaned and carefully rebuilt with modern display, power and audio upgrades. The restoration covers the condition of the internal hardware as well as the console’s exterior.

The finished handheld retains the original cartridge-based operation, familiar controls and classic Game Boy Color form factor while providing a brighter screen, refreshed sound and the convenience of a built-in rechargeable battery. It arrives fully assembled, ready to use with your own compatible Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges.

Laminated Hispeedido OLED Display

The original reflective Game Boy Color LCD has been replaced with a laminated Hispeedido OLED / AMOLED display.

Its viewing area is approximately 25% larger than the original screen, with deep black levels, strong contrast, vivid colour reproduction and wide viewing angles. The laminated construction removes the visible air gap between the display and lens, creating a cleaner image.

Integer scaling preserves the sharp pixel structure of the original 160 × 144 Game Boy Color picture. Original Game Boy and Game Boy Color games retain their familiar artwork, with selectable presentation effects allowing you to adjust how the pixels appear.

Touch-sensitive controls provide access to the display’s on-screen menu. Hold your finger against the lower half of the screen to open the menu, then hold your finger against the upper half to close it. The menu provides control over brightness, pixel presentation, colour palettes, frame blending and the illuminated Game Boy Color logo colours.

Touch controls are used for display settings. Gameplay continues to use the console’s physical D-pad and buttons.

Built-In 1800mAh Rechargeable Battery

Power is supplied by a built-in 1800mAh rechargeable battery, removing the need to regularly purchase and replace disposable AA batteries.

Charging is handled through the original Game Boy Color barrel power socket using the included USB-to-barrel charging cable. This retains the familiar exterior layout without cutting an additional USB port into the replacement shell.

Battery runtime varies depending on display brightness, speaker volume, cartridge power consumption and battery condition. Adjusting brightness and volume can help extend playtime between charges.

The console must remain switched off while charging. Charge-and-play is not supported. Disconnect the charging cable before switching on to play.

Upgraded Audio

The internal audio system is refreshed with an upgraded 2W speaker for clearer and stronger sound from the Game Boy Color’s built-in mono audio output.

The original volume wheel is serviced during the restoration process, while the original 3.5mm headphone connection remains available for compatible wired headphones. Stereo audio is provided through the headphone socket where supported by the game.

Panasonic Capacitor Replacement

The original Game Boy Color motherboard is recapped using modern Panasonic SMD capacitors as part of the restoration.

The ageing audio and display capacitors are replaced with modern equivalents, while the main power capacitor is uprated to support the additional demands of the laminated OLED screen, upgraded speaker and rechargeable battery system.

Key solder joints, controls and connectors are inspected during restoration. Areas showing signs of weak, cold or fractured solder joints are reflowed where required before the console is reassembled.

Custom Shell, Buttons & Controls

A yellow replacement shell, fresh silicone membranes and new buttons give the console a clean custom appearance while retaining the original Game Boy Color shape and familiar control layout. The blue D-pad and contrasting coloured A/B buttons complete the Pokémon-inspired styling, complemented by the display’s customisable illuminated logo.

This is a custom restored build, rather than an untouched original Nintendo Pokémon special-edition collector’s item.

The original cartridge slot, link port, infrared communication window, headphone socket, volume wheel and physical controls remain in their familiar positions. Compatible games can continue to use the console’s link and infrared functions with the appropriate hardware and accessories.

Original Cartridge Compatibility

The console runs games using its original Nintendo Game Boy Color hardware.

Compatible original grey Game Boy cartridges, black dual-compatible cartridges and clear Game Boy Color cartridges can be inserted directly into the cartridge slot. Insert a compatible cartridge while the console is switched off, switch on and play using the familiar physical controls.

Game Boy Advance cartridges are not supported. Games shown in the photographs demonstrate the display and are not included. Existing cartridge saves remain dependent on the cartridge’s own save hardware and, where fitted, its save battery.

A protective black carry case, black wrist strap, lens-cleaning cloth, USB charging cable and printed display box are included, providing useful accessories for storage, handling and presentation.

Restoration Process

Disassembly: Each Game Boy Color is fully disassembled so the motherboard, cartridge connector, controls, ports and internal components can be individually inspected and cleaned.

Motherboard Inspection & Reflow: The original Nintendo motherboard is checked for corrosion, contamination, damaged traces and weakened solder joints. Relevant areas are reflowed to help repair cold or fractured joints that can cause power faults, audio-visual problems, intermittent operation or unresponsive controls.

Panasonic Capacitor Replacement: The console is recapped using Panasonic SMD capacitors. The audio and display capacitors are replaced with modern equivalents, while the main power capacitor is uprated to support the OLED display, upgraded speaker and rechargeable battery system.

Reassembly With Modern Upgrades: The restored motherboard is rebuilt with the laminated Hispeedido OLED / AMOLED screen, refreshed audio components, upgraded 2W speaker, serviced volume wheel, link port, charging circuit and built-in 1800mAh rechargeable battery.

New Shell & Controls: A yellow replacement shell, fresh silicone membranes and Pokémon-inspired coloured buttons are fitted while retaining the original Game Boy Color cartridge slot, link port, infrared hardware, headphone socket and familiar control layout.

Getting Started

1. Inspect the console and included accessories on arrival.
2. With the console switched off, connect the supplied USB-to-barrel charging cable to the original power socket and a standard regulated 5V USB power source.
3. Charge the battery with the console switched off, then disconnect the charging cable before use.
4. Insert a compatible Game Boy or Game Boy Color cartridge securely while the console is switched off.
5. Switch on the console and adjust the volume to a comfortable level.
6. Adjust brightness and display effects using the screen’s touch-operated menu.
7. Save through the game’s own save function where available, then switch off before removing the cartridge or reconnecting the charger.
8. Store the console in its carry case when not in use.

Display Settings And Controls

Open Display Menu: Hold a finger against the lower half of the screen to open the on-screen menu.
Close Display Menu: Hold a finger against the upper half of the screen to close the menu.
Brightness: Adjust through the display menu.
Screen Effects: Select the preferred pixel presentation and colour settings through the menu.
Frame Blending: Enable or disable through the display menu to suit the game and preferred presentation.
Illuminated Logo: Adjust the Game Boy Color logo colour through the display menu.
Gameplay: Use the D-pad, A, B, START and SELECT buttons as normal.

Connection & Control Troubleshooting

Console Does Not Switch On: With the console switched off, charge the battery using the supplied cable and a known-working regulated 5V USB power source. Disconnect the charging cable before testing. If the console still does not power on, contact Retrolize.

Battery Does Not Appear To Charge: Check that the console is switched off and that both ends of the supplied cable are securely connected. Try another suitable USB power source. Do not force the barrel connector or substitute an adapter solely because its plug fits.

Game Does Not Start Or The Nintendo Logo Appears Corrupted: Switch off, remove the cartridge and reinsert it securely. Test another known-working compatible cartridge to help distinguish a cartridge issue from a console fault.

Game Does Not Retain Saves: Check whether the game supports saving and whether the cartridge’s save battery or memory requires attention. The console’s rechargeable battery does not maintain cartridge saves.

Display Menu Opens During Play: Close the menu by holding a finger against the upper half of the screen. Avoid resting fingers on the touch-sensitive display area during gameplay.

Screen Looks Too Dark Or Colours Have Changed: Check the brightness, selected colour settings and pixel effects. Display settings can change the apparent brightness and presentation without indicating a screen fault.

No Sound From The Speaker: Check the volume wheel and disconnect any headphones. If sound remains absent, contact Retrolize.

Battery Runtime Is Shorter Than Expected: Reduce brightness and volume, and test with a standard compatible cartridge. Runtime varies with settings, cartridge power demand and battery condition.

Multiplayer Or Trading Does Not Connect: Check that both games support the intended link function and that the cable is compatible with the consoles. Follow the connection procedure required by the games. Infrared functions do not replace a link cable for games that require one.

This restored and upgraded Nintendo Game Boy Color is covered by a 12-month limited Retrolize warranty from the date of delivery against manufacturing defects and hardware faults arising during normal use.

Warranty coverage includes eligible faults affecting the AMOLED display, physical controls, internal speaker, headphone output, rechargeable battery, charging circuit, power system and restored motherboard.

The warranty does not cover accidental damage, liquid damage, cracked or pressure-damaged screens, damaged cartridge connectors, bent link-port pins, crushed shells, damaged charging cables, excessive pulling, unauthorised repairs or further modifications.

Battery damage caused by using an unsuitable charger, incorrect voltage, attempting to play while charging, puncturing the battery or exposing the console to excessive heat is not covered.

Display damage caused by drops, impacts, pressure, deep scratches or liquid ingress is not considered a manufacturing defect.

Individual cartridge faults, dirty cartridge contacts, depleted cartridge-save batteries, software-specific behaviour and incompatibility with unlicensed accessories are not considered console faults.

Normal cosmetic wear and the gradual reduction in rechargeable battery capacity that occurs through age and repeated charge cycles are not considered manufacturing defects.

Warranty claims remain subject to the full Retrolize warranty terms.
