At the centre of every console is an original Nintendo Game Boy Color motherboard. Rather than simply fitting an old board into a replacement shell, each system is fully disassembled, inspected, cleaned and carefully rebuilt with modern display, power and audio upgrades.

The finished console retains the original cartridge-based operation, familiar controls and classic Game Boy Color form factor while providing a brighter screen, improved sound and the convenience of a built-in rechargeable battery. It is an ideal choice for anyone looking for a modified Game Boy Color without losing the character of the original Nintendo hardware.

Laminated HighSpeedido OLED Display

The original reflective Game Boy Color LCD has been replaced with a laminated HighSpeedido OLED / AMOLED display.

Its viewing area is approximately 25% larger than the original screen, with deep black levels, stronger contrast, vivid colour reproduction and wide viewing angles. The laminated construction removes the visible air gap between the display and lens, creating a cleaner and more immediate image.

Integer scaling preserves the sharp pixel structure of the original 160×144 Game Boy Color picture without applying the heavy smoothing often associated with basic replacement screens. Original Game Boy and Game Boy Color games remain crisp, clearly defined and faithful to their original artwork.

Touch-sensitive controls provide access to the display’s on-screen menu. Hold your finger against the lower half of the screen to open the menu, then hold your finger against the upper half to close it. The on-screen menu provides control over screen brightness, pixel presentation, colour palettes, frame blending and the illuminated Game Boy Color logo colours.

Built-In 1800mAh Rechargeable Battery

Power is supplied by a built-in 1800mAh rechargeable battery, removing the need to regularly purchase and replace disposable AA batteries.

Charging is handled through the original Game Boy Color power socket using the included USB-to-barrel charging cable. This retains the familiar exterior layout of the original console without cutting an additional USB port into the replacement shell.

Battery runtime varies depending on display brightness, speaker volume, cartridge type and general use, but the high-capacity rechargeable battery is designed to provide extended portable play between charges.

The console must remain switched off while charging. Charge-and-play is not supported.

Upgraded Audio

The internal audio system is refreshed with an upgraded 2W speaker for clearer and stronger sound from the Game Boy Color’s built-in mono audio output.

The original volume wheel is serviced during the restoration process, while the original 3.5mm headphone connection remains available for compatible wired headphones. Stereo audio is provided through the headphone socket where supported by the game.

Panasonic Capacitor Replacement

The original Game Boy Color motherboard is recapped using modern Panasonic SMD capacitors to improve long-term reliability.

The ageing audio and display capacitors are replaced with modern equivalents, while the main power capacitor is uprated to support the additional demands of the laminated OLED screen, upgraded speaker and rechargeable battery system.

Key solder joints, controls and connectors are inspected during the restoration. Areas showing signs of weak, cold or fractured solder joints are reflowed where required before the console is reassembled.

Custom Shell, Buttons & Controls

A premium replacement shell, fresh silicone membranes and new buttons give the console a clean custom appearance while retaining the original Game Boy Color shape and familiar control layout.

The original cartridge slot, link port, infrared communication window, headphone socket, volume wheel and physical controls remain in their original positions. The result is a custom Game Boy Color that feels immediately recognisable while benefiting from carefully selected modern upgrades.

Original Cartridge Compatibility

This is an original hardware-based Nintendo Game Boy Color rather than an emulation or FPGA handheld.

Original grey Game Boy cartridges, black dual-compatible cartridges and clear Game Boy Color cartridges can be inserted directly into the cartridge slot. There are no emulator menus, software libraries or operating systems to manage: insert a compatible cartridge, switch on the console and play using original Nintendo hardware.

A protective black carry case, wrist strap, lens-cleaning cloth and printed display box are included, providing a complete package for storage, display or regular portable use.

Restoration Process

Disassembly: Each Game Boy Color is fully disassembled so the motherboard, cartridge connector, controls, ports and internal components can be individually inspected and cleaned.

Motherboard Inspection & Reflow: The original Nintendo motherboard is checked for corrosion, contamination, damaged traces and weakened solder joints. Relevant areas are reflowed to help repair cold or fractured joints that can cause power faults, audio-visual problems, intermittent operation or unresponsive controls.

Panasonic Capacitor Replacement: The console is recapped using Panasonic SMD capacitors. The audio and display capacitors are replaced with modern equivalents, while the main power capacitor is uprated to support the OLED display, upgraded speaker and rechargeable battery system.

Reassembly With Modern Upgrades: The restored motherboard is rebuilt with the laminated HighSpeedido OLED / AMOLED screen, refreshed audio components, upgraded 2W speaker, serviced volume wheel, link port, charging circuit and built-in 1800mAh rechargeable battery.

New Shell & Controls: A replacement shell, fresh silicone membranes and new buttons are fitted while retaining the original Game Boy Color cartridge slot, link port, infrared hardware, headphone socket and familiar control layout.

This restored and upgraded Nintendo Game Boy Color is covered by a 12-month limited Retrolize warranty from the date of delivery against manufacturing defects and hardware faults arising during normal use.

Warranty coverage includes eligible faults affecting the AMOLED display, physical controls, internal speaker, headphone output, rechargeable battery, charging circuit, power system and restored motherboard.

The warranty does not cover accidental damage, liquid damage, cracked or pressure-damaged screens, damaged cartridge connectors, bent link-port pins, crushed shells, damaged charging cables, excessive pulling, unauthorised repairs or further modifications.

Battery damage caused by using an unsuitable charger, incorrect voltage, attempting to play while charging, puncturing the battery or exposing the console to excessive heat is not covered.

Display damage caused by drops, impacts, pressure, deep scratches or liquid ingress is not considered a manufacturing defect.

Individual cartridge faults, dirty cartridge contacts, depleted cartridge-save batteries, software-specific behaviour and incompatibility with unlicensed accessories are not considered console faults.

Normal cosmetic wear and the gradual reduction in rechargeable battery capacity that occurs through age and repeated charge cycles are not considered manufacturing defects.
